Can I compost in winter?

Yes. Decomposition slows as temperatures drop, but it does not quit, and a well-sized pile makes its own heat.

Keep adding materials all winter, keep the balance of browns and greens, and do not worry if the outer layer freezes while the core stays warm. A pile at least three feet across insulates itself, and a tarp or thick cap of leaves helps hold heat and shed cold rain.

In a mild Texas winter, a managed pile barely slows down at all. Worm bins should come indoors or into a garage once nights get near freezing, since worms have no core to retreat to.

Everything that stalled in a hard cold snap wakes back up in spring. Nothing is lost, just delayed.
