How long does composting take?

Anywhere from about two months to over a year, and the difference is management.

An actively managed hot pile, meaning chopped materials, balanced browns and greens, wrung-out-sponge moisture, and turning every week or two, can finish in two to three months.

A passive pile that you add to and mostly ignore will still get there, just in six months to a year or more.

Want it faster? Chop everything smaller, keep the balance and moisture right, turn it more often, and build the pile at least three feet across so it holds heat. Every one of those moves shaves time.
