Do I need a special bin?

No. Compost happens in a free-standing pile just fine, and people have made it that way forever.

What a bin buys you is neatness, moisture control, and pest resistance. Walls keep the pile tidy and hold humidity. Lids and enclosed designs slow down rodents and raccoons. Tumblers take the effort out of turning for people who will not pick up a pitchfork.

A free option that works well: four pallets wired into a square. A worm bin is the exception where the container matters, since it needs drainage and ventilation, but even that can be a drilled storage tote.

Buy a bin for convenience if you want it. The compost does not care.
